MAKE IT MONDAY: Move it-Music Toy Challenge

BUBBLY HYDRANGEAS

Some of us chose to opt in to Mrs Lunn Art Workshop to make Hydrangeas.

We mixed paint with dish-washing liquid and water to make a special solution.  We used straws to blow bubbles into the solution.  Then we carefully placed our paper over the bubbles.  The bubbles left a coloured print on our paper that looked like hydrangea flowers.

When the flowers were dry, we made the leaves to add the finishing touch to our art.

We think they look beautiful.

UH OH! WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!

Mrs Lunn counted the instruments in the school and there is not enough for us all to have one in the concert!  What will we have have to do?  Mrs Lunn thought we would need to cancel the concert since there aren't enough instruments.  We said "NOOOOO!"

So Mrs Lunn gave us a chance to come up with a solution to our problem.

We brainstormed lots of different ways for how we could solve our problem.

We came up with some wonderful ideas.

Then we had to reflect on each idea?  Was it a good one?  We thought about borrowing some instruments, but what if they got broken?  We aren't allowed to bring toys to school ... so that idea wouldn't work.

We suggested sharing an instrument or taking turns but that really defeats the the purpose of having everyone in the bad altogether.

Then some people suggested that we MAKE our instruments!  What a good idea!  Then everyone will be able to play in the band.

Hooray!

Mrs Lunn showed us a slideshow of some amazing ideas we could try.  She has uploaded it to the blog so we can have a look at home and have a think about what instrument we would like to make.

Please can you help us have a look at home for some bits and pieces that I could bring to make my instrument with.

MRS LUNN'S WHANAU GROUP BAND

This afternoon, Mrs Lunn taught her whanau group how to read musical notation.  Here they are performing their first ever song!  Well done guys!

MRS KENYON'S DEBUT CONCERT!

Mrs Kenyon has been learning to play the guitar!  She already knows the D and G chords,  Today she performed a song for us.  

Mrs Kenyon asked us if we would like to help her learn the guitar and maybe we could all put on a concert!

We thought that sounded like a great idea!  We'd love to be rock stars!

So we took a bit of time to WONDER about everything we would need to do to be ready for the concert!  We brainstormed all our questions and then we shared our ideas with the rest of the class.

BREAD MAKING

Yummy......  Bread making was easy and, unlike the hokey pokey, Mrs Kenyon didn't burn it.  Delicious!

  

MAKING SCONES!

Today a group of us opted in Mrs Lunn's Scone workshop.  

First we put 2 Cups of self-raising flour into the bowl...

The we added 3/4 of a cup of Lemonade (not diet or the scones will taste funny)...

Then add 1/2 a cup of cream...

Stir the ingredients together and then kneed.

Put into an 18-20cm round on baking paper and cut into 8 wedges.

Bake at 220 degrees for 15-20cm

Delicious!

While we were cooking we also learnt about equivalent fractions.  We don't have a measuring cup for 3/4 of a cup and so we realised that if we used the 1/4 measuring cup we would just need to fill it 3 times!

Then when it came to measuring the cream Mrs Lunn asked us how we could measure the cream without using the 1/2cup.  We said we could use the 1/4 cup and fill it twice because we know that two quarters is the same as 1 half!  Mrs Lunn was impressed - we know equivalent fractions!  That is super big kid maths!  Go us!!!

Coloured Milk

Mr Waterland, a Chemist Lecturer from Massey University, came and visited Piako Rua today.  Some of us worked with him making Coloured Milk.

We put food colouring in the milk and then put in a small drop of dish washing liquid.  Look at what happened to the colours.  It was amazing.

 

 

Liquid Fireworks

  

Mr Waterland, a Chemist Lecturer from Massey University, came and visited Piako Rua today.  Some of us worked with him making Liquid Fireworks.

We put food colouring into oil to see what would happen.  Then we the oil and food colouring with water.  We couldn't believe what we saw.  "It's just sitting there" (Jayden).

We had a great afternoon!

Chocolate Cake

Both of this weeks chocolate cakes turned out beautiful.  It must be Mrs Lunn's amazing recipe.

Hokey Pokey

Mrs Kenyon helped us make hokey pokey today.  The first batch was a burnt disaster which made our entire class smell BUT the second batch was perfect.  Yummy!  

                    

OUR MEASURING AFTERNOON

PIAKO RUA'S ASSEMBLY!

On Friday Piako Rua hosted School Assembly.  We were really nervous but the teachers said we did a great job.  Thank you so much to all our families for coming to watch us.  We are so lucky to have your support.
