GETTING READY FOR MARKET DAY

We are super busy preparing for Market Day.  

Today we made 46 whales to sell to Piako Tahi!

And we made a hole lot of cute caterpillar pegs too...

LEARNING ABOUT MONEY

We have started to learn about money.  Yesterday we had a whole lot of activities to choose from to help us learn about money.  We also had some activities that taught us about tally charts because we are going to conduct surveys and ask kids who would like to buy our products.  That way we will make sure that we make enough products for our customers demand.

We also talked about our Needs and Wants.  For example we WANT ice cream but we don't NEED it!  We do NEED things like fresh air and water and food.  We had pictures that we had to classify into whether they are a NEED or WANT.

You can help us at home by getting us to read prices at the supermarket or in our junk mail.  We can practice counting our pocket money.  We could even do a few jobs at home to earn some money.

Pirate Writing

Today we had a pirate writing competition.  We had at least 20 children share their writing with the class and they voted on the best 5 stories.  Then Karys and Emily were selected as having the best pirate stories for the day.  They each won a pirate album.

"Arrrr!  Walk the plank or I will fight you!"  Tash shivered as she took tiny steps towards the end.  Suddenly she had an idea.  She did a back flip onto the deck. She snatched a pirates sword and she fought off the pirates until they were so scared they jumped off the plank and the captain stuttered "A-a-abandon s-s-ship".  She watched them get chased by the sharks to land.  She stopped and looked around herself.  She was on a pirate ship!  There was gold in the captains cabin and everything.

Once upon a time there lived a pirate girl named Karys.  She always sailed the seven seas and she loved an adventure.  Especially ones with treasure at the end.  But one day .... she heard a sound.  It sounded like a magical sound.  Later that day she heard some more sounds like "Arrr!"  So she said "Hey!  Whoever is making that sound please stop now!".  So the pirate stopped and stared at her.  She said "What?  I just said shhhh!" said Karys.  "Matie you are not allowed on our boat".  "Why?" said Karys.  "Because you said we have to be quiet.  I'm sorry but I am trying to fall asleep and you were trying to dance" said Karys.

PIRATE FUN!

We are learning to be pirates.  Did you know pirates need to be good at telling the time so then know when to sail on the seven seas.  They also need to know positional language like on, next to, behind, beside etc.

So we are practising these things in class.

We are having great fun learning to be a pirate!

CATCH A PIRATE!

Today the Pirate left us another note!

He said he would send us a friend to visit.   The letter said if we could catch his friend, we could keep him!

We wondered how we could catch the pirate's friend...

We wrote our ideas down.

Then, we decided to make our traps to catch the pirate's friend!

We caught something!!!

TROPICAL WILDLIFE

Today we finished our Tropical Wildlife that we started making with Mrs Ruawai last week.  

We glued eyes, legs and feathers on our creations to make them look extra cool.

We are very happy with our finished product and look forward to having them on display at the Art Expo.

GEOMETRY AND PATTERN AND ALGEBRA

As part of our Art inquiry, we are looking into Geometry, and Pattern and Algebra.  Here are some photos of us busy learning last week.  Karys and Bentley are completing colouring in a complex geometric pattern...

The boys are using shapes to fill in a tan-gram...

Connor and Regan are busy sorting art pictures by their elements...

Connor and Tasman are practising making repeating patterns out of coloured beans.  They were able to tell the teachers the rules for these patterns.  

For example:  the rule for yellow, yellow, blue is AAB.

Ms Palmer was helping to teach the kids all about symmetry.  If something is symmetrical, what is on one side is reflected onto the other side.  These kids were challenged to make symmetrical pizzas!

'THE MIXED-UP CHAMELEON" By Eric Carle

Zentangle is a fun way to create amazing patterns by drawing lines or shapes. This type of art fits perfectly with our Algebra learning. This was our first time and we’ve done a wonderful job.  

 We used colour to create stunning chameleon’s based on Eric Carle’s book.

 

 

SKETCHING WITH HAYDEN

Our sketching group had their last session with Hayden today.  They made some amazing 'fat' animals and some collaborative drawings in small groups.  Well done!

  

 

WILDFLOWERS

Mrs Kenyon worked with a group of children today to make their "Wildflowers".

 

We used orange, yellow and red crayons to brighten up the background.

  

The children picked yellow, orange or red dye for their background.

Then we used our fingertips to paint the flowers.
