Writing wizz!

Wow! This amazing piece of writing was done this morning...

Rustle! Rustle! Went the sound of the Manawatu River rustling along. On Saturday me and my Dad and plus my little sister went to the Manawatu River for a swim. The current was strange. It was also very, very deep and I saw people making fun of each other. We had to stay close to my Dad because my little sister nearly drowned but so did I! The river was shining blue and it also looked sparkly in the distance. The currents were wavy and unsafe so we couldn’t go too deep. There were lots of odd things to see. Like the big, gigantic rock that had a word that said ROCCO in all capital letters. The river was freezing cold and slippery because the stones weren’t stable so I kept on slipping over. The river was fun but after some time it was time to go home. Mum was very happy to see me.

ELF ON A SHELF - TUESDAY

SCOUT GOES ON HOLIDAY

I love Scout because Scout is cool and he hides in the classroom.  He is the best in the world.  Scout is on the tree today.  Scout is scary too and he is in the Whisper Island today.  I love Scout.
By Joel

Ahh... I love this vacation especially in Whisper Island at school.  I hope the children don't come in.  I'm so relaxed in the tree.  Maybe I should stay in the tree and stand here.  I hate to say, but it is noisy in the class but relaxing in Whisper Island.  I wish I could sleep here on the tree.
By Maarire

Today Scout hid in Whisper Island climbing a coconut tree at the beach.  It looks like he's trying to find a nice hard coconut so he can do the coconut drums.  Maybe he went to Hawaii for a vacation and then he went to the hot beach.  When he got there he had nothing to do because he's too little to swim so he just climbed a coconut tree and did the coconut drums.

ELF ON THE SHELF - MONDAY

Today our elf on the shelf has taken one of the teacher's candy canes and now he's trying to climb the shelf!  I can't believe that he'd take one of the teacher's things.  "How naughty is that?"  Scout is going to older and cheekier.  Oh no! I don't want him to take my stuff and tonight I'm going to look on my iPod and look on the Santa tracer app and see how Santa is going.
By Karys

Emily gave Mrs Lunn a candy cane but Scout took it and ate it but before he got a small lick, Mrs Lunn came and stopped him so he used it for a grappling hook and he climbed up as fast as he could but Mrs Lunn caught the candy cane and dragged him around.  "Finally!" said Mrs Lunn.
By Riley S

Today Scout the elf is hanging on the teacher's cupboard.  Hanging on what?  Mrs Lunn's candy cane.  Who gave it to her?  Me!  I hope Mrs Lunn can still eat it!
By Emily

"I haven't eaten in days.  I suppose Mrs Lunn won't mind if I take a few nibbles or her candy cane.  Mmmm, this is delicious!  I might take a few more bites.  I realised it was all gone!  Ohh wait.  I know what I'll do.  I will buy a new one but I realised it wasn't the same brand."

ELF ON THE SHELF - THURSDAY

SCOUT THE TEACHER

Today Scout hid up high reading a book called Father Christmas heard a fart.  When the class heard Mrs Lunn say the name of the book, the whole class laughed!  I wonder where he will hide tomorrow.  I hope he wont be reading a very, very funny book!

ELF ON THE SHELF - WEDNESDAY

Scout's having a drink!

Welcome back to the Elf on the Shelf News...

We have some good news and funny news.
First, we start with the good news.  Scout got his magic back!
Now, the funny news.  When I got to school, someone showed me where Scout is now and guess what... he is by his box that he came in and is drinking water from a very long straw!

THE MAGIC KITTEN - BY ADAM

The Magic Kitten

Image result for kitten with white paws free image

Once there was a magic kitten.  It had white paws and black fur.  But one day it saw it's worst nightmare.  An invasion of mice!  So he pounced into the air.
"I'll win this for my village!"
"Not if we win!" said the mice.
SPLAT!
"Hey!" said the cat.  "Who threw that?"
"Stop the war!" squeaked the mice.
"It's the weekend so why are we fighting?" asked the cat.
"For no reason," replied the mice.
But the mice were not happy because the cat had squashed the mice village.
"Oh I'm sorry," said the cat.
"It's ok," the mice replied.
"Let's not fight from now on," suggested the cat.
"Deal," said the mice.

ELF ON THE SHELF - TUESDAY

Look where Scout is today!

"Santa, Santa! Quickly!  The people are starting to wake up!"
"Alright, alright! I'm coming." said Santa.
All the people were waking up.  All of a sudden the elf started to fly.  He found the perfect hiding space.  Then... he got into the stickers.  In the morning, we saw him in the cupboard covered with stickers all over him!

By Darcy

Woosh! Up! Down! Loop de loop!
"I'm sorry.  I was just getting from Sarah's house to Father Christmas.  If you don't be good I will tell Santa.  My name is Scout."
After he was finished I said, "no, no.  Don't tell Santa because I have been good."
"If you have been good I won't tell Santa,"  replied Scout.

By Keira

Today someone touched Scout and now his magic has gone away.  Scout is really nice elf.   Scout is red and white.  He is in the teachers' cupboard next to some stickers.  In the night, Scout flies back to the North Pole and tells Santa if we're being good or not.  I wish that Scout gets better.  I'm sure he will because the person who touched hum is writing a sorry note.  He's also going to take a picture of him and Scout because if you give him a picture it will turn into Pixie dust so Scout can fly again.  That person is feeling really guilty and he said he won't do it again.

By Mia

We wonder where he will be tomorrow!

ELF ON THE SHELF WRITING

Today we found Scout our Elf on the phone.  Maybe Scout wants to talk to the other elves or say to Santa which kids are good and which are bad.  Every night, Scout flies away to Santa to tell him were the kids bad or good.  Then he flies back and hides in the classroom.  First time we found Scout on the shelf stuck in the sellotape but when no on saw him he got out of the sellotape and ended climbing up on top of the shelf.  When the teachers saw it they said "we will not help you get down because if you climbed up then you will be able to climb down."  But today we found him up on the phone because he wants to have a chat with the other elves.

By Sofya

My Elf hid on the game machine.  Today he hid on the drawers.  You have to name him in order for it to work.  Me Elf's name is Roodoll. JC's Elf wrapped the Christmas Tree with toilet paper.  At the end of the time with you, they are cheeky.  They even can have a bowl of marshmallows.

By Campbell

Woosh!  "Ha ha ha!  I toilet papered your Christmas tree!" said DJ my Elf.  Mum nearly called Santa.  She was fuming.  Her ears were as red as a stop light!

MARKET DAY!

Market Day was finally here!
We were so excited to set up our stalls and for the Piako Tahi kids to come.

We have raised nearly $400!

Georgia and her Dad's amazing birdhouse made $89!!!

Ronald McDonald House is going to LOVE us!

Here are some stories we wrote about Market Day.
Mrs Ruawai typed them up for us.

Piako Rua is going to have Market Day today. This is how you do it.  Firstly you make spiderwebs, palmy rocks, and sometimes you can do it by yourself. It can sometimes be good because peace and quiet. Poor Ryleigh, JC’s sister. I hope you’re better, Ryleigh!
Kouta

Dear Ronald McDonald House we have organised a market day for all of the sick people in Starship Hospital. We has to brainstorm our ideas also known as a fundraiser we have made a birdhouse, animal pencil holders, lady bug wind turners, monster bookmarks, fans, wands place mats pet rocks, spider webs, peg dolls, minions, stress balls, shell fish, floating ball activities, monkey brooches, sunshine magnets...wow that’s lots!
From Anoushka

JC’s sister used to be sick so you had to take her up to starship hospital and his parents had to stay at McDonald House but I did not know where JC slept...who knows.
Georgia

Today Piako Rua is doing a market day for Ronald MacDonald House because JC’s sister Ryleigh went up to starship hospital in Auckland even a bird house raffle it is 50c per ticket and i am selling magic wands and my best friend Connor is selling spider webs.
Jacob L

Today is Market Day I am so excited but I am a little bit nervous. The reason we are having market day is because JC’s little sister, Ryleigh, was very sick. She had a special kind of sickness called Leukemia. Anyway I forgot to tell you the thing I made was an animal pencil holder. It was so fun!
Karys

Today is Market Day! Do you know what is market day? Well I’ll tell you. Market day is a day when people come and buy stuff. We’re doing this for you! We know that you have Leukemia. So we’re trying to do this for you. We are raising money for all the sick kids. We’re going to donate the money to Ronald MacDonald House. We’re glad to help the sick girls and boys. You’re doing a great job of helping.
Mia

We would like to help JC’s sister Ryleigh. She has been very sick so we decided to have a market day. There are magnet monkeys, chickens, pen can holders, wands and heaps more. We are going to send it to Ronald McDonald so they can use it for medicine.

Athletics recounts

Here are some recounts of the fantastic day we had at Riverdale School Athletics Day 2017.

One very sunny hot day we did athletics. I kept on calling it Olympics over and over again. My favourite was hurdles. I really wanted to do hurdles every time we did Olympics...Oh sorry, athletics. Now we can move onto shot put and discus. Shot put I went to flag three, discus I went to flag two. (I thought I was going to get flag three, but I got two instead of three.) I felt sad but when we moved on to relays, I was happy again. I came 11th. I loved all of them actually. Athletics is my favourite sport apart from Rippa. But I think athletics is pretty cool!
By Jacob Conwell

On your marks, get set, go! I was off. It was athletics day. There were hurdles, high jump, discus, long jump, shot put, 400 metre run and best of all the relays. I was part of the Takahe relay team. I came second on long jump. I almost made it to the end of the sandpit! It was very hot. I felt sweat dripping down my back, then slowly dripping like a broken tap onto the ground. It was fun yesterday.
By Petra

Guess what? No, no, no we didn't find a dead bird yesterday. We did athletics yesterday! We did discus, hurdles, high jump, sprints...well I didn't really do high jump and sprints because on hurdles those naughty high hurdles...well they were just too high for me...so I tripped then fell on my face. My tooth got really wiggly with blood squirting out of my mouth...sore leg...can't walk... I went home and yeah, I think Takahe and Kereru won, but I'm not sure. By the way I am in Kereru!
By Emily

Yesterday was athletics day. We went on the bus to Massey University. I am a year 2 boy, I went with the year 2 boys Zac S., Zac W., Devon, Bentley, Benji N., Kyjahn, Kouta, Kade and lucky last Liam. First I went to shot put. I don't know how far I got, but I would say about 3 or 4 metres. Next I went to discus. There was a 1, 2, 3 and 4. I got a 4. After that I did hurdles. First and second were still in and the rest were out. I got into the boy's finals and came second place. Then I did high jump. I got a three. It was quite hard. Next I did sprints. I got into the boy's finals which was me, Benji N., and Kyjahn. Benji N. came first, I came seconds and Kyjahn came third. We had 2 matches. Benji N, 8 house points for Tui. I scored 6 house points for Kereru and Kyjahn scored 4 house points for Kereru. Kyjahn and I added up our points for Kereru and in total we got 10 house points for Kereru. Next I did long jump. There were 3 flags and I jumped to flag 3. Next it was relays. I couldn't race because I was a spare. First was the year 1's. Kakapo then it was year 2's. Kakapo won that. Then year 3's. Kakapo won . Then year 4's. Kakapo won. Then year 5's. Kakapo won. Year 6's, Tui won. After the relay races, we got into our homerooms and went on the bus back to school! What a day!

PATCH AND THE SEASNAKE

One beautiful sunny morning Patch was sailing on his new ship.  Suddenly, halfway to Neverland, a humongous seasnake rose out of the wavy, wet, splashy water and said,
"You're not going past unless you find me a golden coin."
"OK" said Pirate Patch and off they went searching.  They started digging.
"Wait!  I found something!  A gold coin!"
They took it to the seasnake.
"OK.  You can go past."

Pirate Writing

Today we had a pirate writing competition.  We had at least 20 children share their writing with the class and they voted on the best 5 stories.  Then Karys and Emily were selected as having the best pirate stories for the day.  They each won a pirate album.

"Arrrr!  Walk the plank or I will fight you!"  Tash shivered as she took tiny steps towards the end.  Suddenly she had an idea.  She did a back flip onto the deck. She snatched a pirates sword and she fought off the pirates until they were so scared they jumped off the plank and the captain stuttered "A-a-abandon s-s-ship".  She watched them get chased by the sharks to land.  She stopped and looked around herself.  She was on a pirate ship!  There was gold in the captains cabin and everything.
By Emily.

Once upon a time there lived a pirate girl named Karys.  She always sailed the seven seas and she loved an adventure.  Especially ones with treasure at the end.  But one day .... she heard a sound.  It sounded like a magical sound.  Later that day she heard some more sounds like "Arrr!"  So she said "Hey!  Whoever is making that sound please stop now!".  So the pirate stopped and stared at her.  She said "What?  I just said shhhh!" said Karys.  "Matie you are not allowed on our boat".  "Why?" said Karys.  "Because you said we have to be quiet.  I'm sorry but I am trying to fall asleep and you were trying to dance" said Karys.

PIRATE STORIES!

The pirates left the diamonds in the bush.  Why did the pirates in the bush?  I do not know!
By Luccas

Hey look!  I found gems.  Probably a pirate came here.  I found a treasure map and we went to find it.

The treasure map said…
Arrr!  I want my gold and gems!
By Conner B

Today we some kids found some gems.  Some were red, some were blue and some were green.  They had a sparkly shine.  So the pirates what them back tomorrow.  We’re worried.  So worried.  Because we only have 7 gems!

We gave the pirate’s gems back.  He gave us a pirate boat from him in return for the gems.
By Samantha

This morning, it started quite ordinary until Riley M was sprinting off outside.  Riley whispered “What shall I go and play on today?  A-ha, the swing.  Youchers!” Riley shouted.

He got poked with a gem.  I ran outside.
“What happened?” I said.
“I got poked by a gem.” replied Riley.
“Let’s go hunting for gems!” I shouted.

After a few hours of hunting for gold and gems, it was time to go home. The next day, Aiden saw a letter.  It said…
“Just to remind you, I’ll be back tomorrow to take my gems and gold.”
Uh oh!  We only had seven gems and one gold coin.  We were hoping he didn’t mind.  We slowly put the bowl down.  The next day the pirate took them and left us a toy.  It seems he didn’t mind after all.  The toy was a two storey pirate ship.
By Petra

Arrr!

I think a pirate owns the gems and coins.  So we should probably set a trap but what if the pirates tries to kill us!

Oh-no!
But the map… it smells disgusting if I do say so myself.

The next morning…
“Got you!”  I screamed.
The whole class looked up.

By Georgia

I think the eggs were from seven skunks because they smell like rotten eggs.  They were found under the bird houses.  The eggs were coloured in every colour in the rainbow.

I think there were a bit more colours than in the rainbow.  Two of the eggs weren’t hatched.  I think there are two baby possums inside those eggs.  They were wet because of the rain.
By Bentley

In the morning, we found some colourful gems.  It must have been from the dinosaurs from ages ago because it must have been a huge gem and dinosaur stepped on the gem because 12 people went to go look for the gems.  The gems shape, line, and medium:  it has heaps of lines because it is a 3D shape.  There was a pirate note in a plastic cup so it must be a pirate because it said “arrr” and “ahoy”.  Pirates say these two words, so it’s a pirate.  There was also a gold , which was one dollar.  It’s definitely not a dinosaur because dinosaurs don’t say the two words and because dinosaurs say nothing except growling.  So it was not a dinosaur.  Now we know that it is a pirate.
By Benji R

“Ouch!” said Riley Mills.  He sat on some gems.  I decided to help him find more.  We found more and more.  People were racing to see the gems.  JC found the most gems.

After all the excitement, JC found a bird’s next.
 By JC

We found some gems.  The gems were shiny and pointy.  It was so hard to find them.  But we found out that it was pirate gems.  We found a map.  It said “Arrr!  Where are my gems.  Tomorrow I will swing by for my gems.”

I forgot to say, we also found a $2 coin.

Today, we found a box.  The pirate came early.  The box had a pirate ship in it.  Mrs Kenyon started to build it but then it was a normal day.
By Campbell

On Tuesday someone found a map and a pirate maybe wrote it and maybe the pirate dropped it and they might have remembered where it was.  Maybe the day before, they will come back and put it there.  I was very nervous about what they would do.  We only had 7 gems and we didn’t have time to find more.

This morning…
Yay, yay!  The pirates got the gems and they gave us another note.  Two people read them and we opened the box from the pirates.  It was a whole ship set.  The pirates were nice.
By Anushka

I think a secret fairy must have dropped the shimmering, colourful gems in the school.  On Monday some people from my class, found them.  But we found out that it was not a fairy.  It was a PIRATE!

So we need to give the gems and coin back tomorrow morning.  If we don’t, they might catch us and the piece of paper smelt like water and it was also disgusting if I do say so myself.

On Wednesday, we found out that the pirates were friendly.  We gave back the gold and gems.  Then we saw the pirate ship.

THE MYSTERY CONTINUES - "SHELLS"

When Mrs Ruawai got to school she discovered that she was the only teacher in Piako Rua.  She got here early and recognised a strange colour under the bird feeders and saw some colourful eggs.  I think they were parrot eggs.  I think were parrot eggs that had a little bit of skin.  They had little lines and purple, red, brown, green and much more which were very, very cold.  I hated the smell.  It smells like a skunk.  I thought they were parrot eggs because some parrots are colourful.  By Joshua

This morning Mrs Ruawai found some weird looking eggs.  Maybe those eggs belong to the dinosaur jaw bone that JC and Connor found yesterday.  Also one of the eggs hasn't hatched yet.  Maybe if the egg hatches Piako Rua will be the famous people ever to see a real live dinosaur.  By Ashton

Today Mrs Ruawai found some cracked eggs but..... only one egg wasn't cracked.  Wait!  Oh yeah I forgot to tell you where she found them.  She found these colourful eggs under our bird boxes and the eggs were really colourful.  By Kyle

'BONE' WRITING!

We wrote some explanations about what we thought the bone was from and how it got in the tree behind our playground.

How did that bone get in that tree?  Was it Bad Jelly's?  Nobody knows but I think a kid threw and put it in a tree and JC and Connor found it and shared it with the class.  Every one of the teeth was loose. By Darcy

Maybe the bone was a Taniwha that lots of possums found and lots of the possums brought it up to the tree and hung it up on the branch.  Maybe the possums ate a fire then they left it up there and JC and Connor found it. By Mika

Maybe in the night a Taniwha went to Riverdale School and went round the back of our playground.  Then some possums came and killed it but not the top of the head.  The next morning Connor and JC found the dinosaur bone and shared it with the class. By Jacob L

This morning Connor and JC found a dinosaur jaw.  I think it is a pterodactyl.  When I got to school I was surprised to see a dinosaur bone.  I couldn't believe it.  I don't know if it was a dinosaur or a Taniwha.  Maybe a few years ago a scientist put it up there and asked us to try and find it.  Or maybe there was a dinosaur fall from space.  By Ashton

I think that a possum dug the dinosaur bone then the possum brought the dinosaur bone up to the tree.  Then got stuck in the tree.  Then JC and Connor found the dinosaur bone.  Then JC shared it with the class.  By Devon

MAKE IT MONDAY

Have a read of these recounts we wrote about what we did during Make it Monday this week! The teddies are so lucky!

I made a sandpit for the teddies and it can transform to a car. I used a really big box and it was long. I added a steering wheel and I also made a TV. I hope the teddies enjoyed playing in it.
By Hunter

In a busy class called Piako Rua on Monday it was time for Make it Monday. The teachers set us a challenge to make the class teddies a playground. Here's the success criteria. It must be strong and must be able to hold one of the teddies. I made mine for Chocolate. It must be fun for them to play on and must be taller or wider than 30cm. On my creation I put a rock climbing wall. I also made ice cream. It was cool and mine met the success criteria.
By Petra

Yesterday we were making a teddy bear playground and it was so fun. In our teddy bear playground there was a tunnel and Chocolate could fit in the tunnel. In our playground there was a living room where Chocolate can do anything he wants and there was a little sandpit where Chocolate can play. When he is scared of something he can look at the picture on the back of the sandpit.

"Yay!  Yay!  Today is the 100th day.  I can make my own fairy bread.  I made my fairy bread but not blue.  So I ate fairy bread and then I went to the painting and then it was clean up time."  By Anushka

"Yay!  Yay! It's the 100th day today and I liked the paper chains and making the hats too because I like the hats".

RONALD MCDONALD ROAD SAFETY RECOUNTS

The show was amazing because Ronald McDonald was so funny. He told us about safety because he wants us to stay safe.
By Ben Baur

Ronald McDonald was really funny and he talked about safety but then he lost his sock at the school but he didn't know where. So he looked everywhere but then he finally found out it was across the road but how will he get across the road? We had to look and listen before he walked.
By Mikaela Te Huna

One day Ronald McDonald was walking on the path with his sock. It is getting windy, I should go home. So he walked home but then his sock got blown away. "Oh no! My sock got blown away." We helped him find it.
By Anushka Gautam

Ronald McDonald is funny. I liked his show because he is funny. What do you like about his show?
By Samantha Bunyan.

"Woof! Woof!' said Issy. Ronald McDonald said "Quiet! I need to focus. I am nearly going to be in front of a whole school and teachers too. So don't bark a bit!"
"They are here" said Ronald McDonald. "Take your places everyone!"
Soon everyone was seated. The show started.
By Georgia Sargent.

Ronald McDonald went to school to find his red and white striped sock but he couldn't cross the road because it was too busy. "What should I do?" said Ronald McDonald. "I might have to look for cars and traffic."
By Caitlin Stretch

The show was amusing. We had Ronald McDonald was there to tell us about road safety. It was so funny. It made me laugh so much. Hahahaha. Come home with me please!
By Riley Schou

Ronald McDonald did a fantastic show for us. He was very funny. We laughed at his sock on his back and when he pretended his sock was alive, he was frightened.
By Keira
