LAST WEEK'S TOP TEN TO PRACTISE AT HOME

Well done to Maarire, JC and Darious on earning Principal's Awards at Assembly on Friday.

And to top off a great week Piako Rua won the Tamatea Trophy!  We were the team sitting the best in Assembly!  Yay us!

THE FLYOVER

Today the jets from Ohakea were supposed to fly over about 12.10 pm so we patiently sat outside and waited.  Unfortunately they didn't come and we had to go to assembly.

But guess what ...

Over they came in the middle of assembly!

HAROLD THE GIRAFFE

Harold and Tim from Life Ed have been visiting Riverdale School this week.  We went to see them.  Tim talked to us about the amazing things our brains, hearts and lungs can do and about the importance of being a kind friend.  We are all unique and special.

THE GREAT CARDBOARD BOX CHALLENGE

This week the teacher's issued us with a challenge.  We had to help come up with an idea for what we could turn a HUGE box into.

First we WONDERED what we could turn the box into.  We brainstormed out ideas and wrote them on a Wonder Sheet.  Next we explore a slideshow that shows some different ideas.

Next, we REFLECTED on which idea we liked the best and decided if our idea will meet all the Success Criteria.

Then we had to draw a plan of our creation and work out what materials we needed to make it.

After we had come up with a plan, we were able to make our idea!

What fun!!!

We produced some pretty amazing creations!  We can't wait to see what group is able to make their creation using the big box!

SIGHT WORDS

A new tab has been added on this Blog called Sight Words.  On the page is a slide presentation of sight words.  This could be used as an after school activity for your child.

SPELLING HOMEWORK

On Friday, your child brought home their spelling book.  Ideally spelling should be practised each day.  The children will need to be able to WRITE the words rather than just reciting how they are spelt.  Please be vigilant with how they are forming their letters as this will reinforce what we are teaching at school.

Further information about spelling can be accessed by clicking the SPELLING tab on this blog.

PIAKO 2 WHANAU

On Fridays, we host our own team assembly.  This is an assembly prepared by us, for us and starring us!

On Friday morning, we sign up on the special sheet if we have some learning we would like to share. Then Maarire and Petra organise the assembly.  They decide the order of the items and who are going to be the presenters.

After lunch we get together and have our assembly.  It is a special time that we celebrate our learning and the learning of others.  The teachers give out certificates which is pretty cool too!

MATHS - NUMERAL IDENTIFICATION

Over the past two weeks we have been focusing on reading numbers.  Mrs Kenyon and Mrs Lunn took workshops where we had activities that helped us to read numbers.  You can help us at home by getting us to read numbers.  We could read prices in the junk mail or at the supermarket.

Here's a song we could sing at home...

PE - PIAKO RUA STYLE!

Today we went out for PE since it wasn't raining today!
 Hooray!

The teachers set up rotations for us to move around.  At each station we were able to practise some of the fundamental skills we need like throwing and catching, jumping and skipping etc.

Here are a few photos of us in action!

OUR FIRST MATHS LESSON

Today in Maths, we got to have a go at trying out some of the new activities.  We had a great time working together and our teachers were impressed with how much we knew!  Go us!!!

WE ARE CREATIVE

On Friday, we brainstormed what Being Creative means.  We came up with some great ideas.  The teachers gave us some time to explore our Creative side.  Here are a few photos of us in action...

WAITANGI DAY

On Friday, Mrs Ruawai read us a book called the Treehouse Treaty.  It was a story about a group of children who made a set of rules for their treehouse.  We talked about the Treaty of Waitangi that was signed many years ago so that everyone in New Zealand could get along together.

We then discussed what rules we need to make our classroom run smoothly.  Next we signed our name on the Treaty by using our fingerprint!

Here is a video that tells you all about the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi...

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Check out a few of the happenings in Piako Rua on our first day!

We had a blast.

Mrs Lunn's Whanau Group had a great time perfecting the Balloon Buddy Walk.  It was pretty tricky stuff.  We had to work together to achieve success.

Great teamwork guys!

And wouldn't you know it ... it was a wet lunchtime!
Maarire used her free time at lunch to practise her Maths.
What a clever cookie.

Some of the kids build an awesome Marble Run!

We had a wonderful first day and everyone was super excited to be back at school.

See you tomorrow!
